Welcome to the results of our 2013 Top Doctors peer survey, the most selective such list in 
the region and a resource our readers have trusted for 27 years.

Just how selective? Peer-chosen winners represent only about 4 percent of all the physicians licensed to practice in our readership area.

Methodology

To arrive at our results, we surveyed nearly 10,000 physicians in the region to find out where they would send a member of their own family in dozens of specialties. This included an online poll of physicians to augment the responses we got from several thousand mailed surveys.

As in years past, the survey revealed clear choices early in the process, both perennial winners and a number of new faces.

Assisting us with the survey were our four physician advisers, who were thus not eligible themselves to be included on the list.

Our Survey Advisers

Gabriel Soudry, M.D., is the section chief of nuclear medicine and director for nuclear medicine services at Medstar Franklin Square Hospital Center, as well as the medical director of the PET-CT for Advanced Radiology at Medical Arts. He is also an instructor at Franklin Square, a clinical assistant professor at the University of Maryland, and works as an attending physician in the Department of Radiology at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, and at George Washington University Hospital.

A former Baltimore Top Doctor, Soudry trained in nuclear medicine at Harvard Medical School’s Joint Program of Nuclear Medicine and is board-certified in internal medicine and nuclear medicine.

Alyson Wells, M.D., is a plastic surgeon in private practice at Valley Plastic Surgery and Medi-Spa in Hunt Valley.  She received her medical degree from Washington University in St. Louis and completed her residency in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. Following this, she finished a second residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Wells is board-certified in plastic surgery as well as otolaryngology-head and neck surgery. Her areas of expertise include cosmetic and reconstructive facial surgery, cosmetic breast surgery, breast reconstruction, and body contouring.

Cynthia F. Bearer, M.D., Ph.D., is the Mary Gray Cobey Professor of Neonatology, chief of the Division of Neonatology, and associate chair for research in the Department of Pediatrics at University of Maryland School of Medicine.  Bearer is board-certified in both pediatrics and neonatal-perinatal medicine.
She received her Ph.D. in biochemistry from Case Western Reserve University, her M.D. from The Johns Hopkins University, and training in neonatology at Harvard University. She has published extensively on issues related to fetal and pediatric environmental exposures. Her work has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control, and the Environmental Protection Agency. Her major research interests are the effect of environmental chemicals on the central nervous system.

John W. Blenko, M.D., is an associate professor in the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and an attending anesthesiologist at the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center. A graduate of Haverford College and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, he completed an anesthesiology residency at Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh and fellowship training in pediatric anesthesiology at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. He sits on the board of a national patient-safety organization and has particular interests in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and sedation of patients for medical procedures, andhas lectured on both of these topics nationally.
