Charm City Cakes Opening Storefront in Harbor East
The small shop will sell cake jars, cupcakes, macarons, and brownies.

Though there was a lot of speculation recently about about whether President Trump's administration copied a cake design from Charm City Cakes, the local bakery doesn't seem phased. In fact, the Remington bake shop is doing so well that it's opening a new storefront in Harbor East this spring.
"We've been doing this on a small scale for a couple of years now," said Charm City Cakes executive chef Geof Manthorne. "Since [owner] Duff [Goldman] is not just known for cakes—he's an all around baker and pastry chef—we've been selling our cake jars and cupcakes in Remington. Now we'll be able to get them in front of more people."
The shop, which will be located at 618 S. President Street Between Roy's and James Joyce, is less than 200 square feet and will act as a retail arm of the bakery, which was made famous by Ace of Cakes on Food Network. The storefront will sell offerings like cake jars, cupcakes, macarons, brownies, and other sweet treats.
"It seems like Harbor East really draws people from all over," Manthorne said. "Remington can feel a little secluded, so now we'll get to attract more tourists, but also locals. If somebody wants a cupcake after lunch on a Wednesday, they can do that."
The shop will be open Tuesday through Saturday from noon-7 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 5. All of the items will still be made at the bakery's flagship location in Remington, where custom cake orders and cake decorating classes will still take place. After founding the bakery in 2002 and becoming a Food Network star, Goldman expanded Charm City Cakes to Los Angeles six years ago.
"We are so excited to open in Harbor East," Goldman said in a press release. "Opening another location in our hometown of Baltimore is incredibly rewarding and we hope an entirely new downtown audience will get to experience a piece of Charm City Cakes."
Manthorne joked that he thinks the store might be too small to host a grand opening party, but he echoed the same sentiment that the city of Baltimore is extremely vital to the bakery's identity.
"I never really liked the perception that we were leaving town when we expanded out west," he said. "This is our home and we've never left. This shop is a nice way to tell Baltimore that we're still here."
