Bogart and Holmes Score at the BMA

deanna-bogart-pic2.jpgLocal faves Deanna Bogart and The Holmes Brothers picked up trophies at the Blue Music Awards (BMA) in Tunica, Mississippi last Thursday. Bogart won "Best Horn Instrumentalist" and The Holmeses took "Best Soul Blues Album" for State of Grace, their most recent disc. It was the first time a woman has ever won the horn category. (Other BMA winners included Koko Taylor, Robert Randolph, Hubert Sumlin, Bobby Rush, Betty LaVette, and Tommy Castro.)On Saturday, Bogart returned to the area and closed the Fourth Annual Groove City Jazz and Blues Festival in Cambridge with a rousing set that showcased her formidable saxophone and piano skills. Bogart's take on Billy Preston's "Will It Go Round In Circles" during the encore was nothing less than transcendent.
