Gogol Bordello just finished a rousing set that proved why they've become a favorite on the international festival circuit. Fusing Eastern Euro gypsy music with rowdy punk rock, they're tailor made for this sort of outdoor circus/carnival. With an amped up, shirtless gypsy banging on an acoustic guitar and shouting lyrics, an MC/cheerleader jogs back and forth exhorting the masses, two scantily clad back-up singers execute choreographed dance moves, an accordionist frantically squeezes his instrument, and a fiddler in a Slayer shirt stalks the stage. It's all great fun, and the crowd—which has grown appreciably over the past two hours—went nuts. Usually accordion and fiddle aren't associated with crowd surfing, but in Gogol Bordello's world they are.
