Chan Marshall and crew (Cat Power) just finished an amazing set that was incredibly satisfying and decidedly anti-festival. With nary an intro, the band ambled onstage and started playing. For the next 50 minutes, Marshall was a captivating presence, while the group played downtempo, simmering, soul grooves more suited for the midnight hour than the noonday sun. In fact, the bandmembers—which included Judah Bauer of the Blues Explosion—looked as though they hadn't seen the sun in years. But they backed Marshall exquisitely, especially on a cover of CCR's "Fortunate Son" (which ended with a Stones-y "Sympathy for the Devil" vibe—and the languid soul of "Lived In Bars."
At the set's conclusion, Marshall tossed bottles of water, balled up copies of her set list, and long-stemmed roses to the crowd.
