Although my fellow blogger was less than impressed, I thought Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings put on a phenomenal show. All around me, I heard folks exclaiming, "I love her!" Her eight-piece band—you know them from the Amy Winehouse CD—was tight and funky, a cross between Stax's Booker T & the MGs and James Brown's powerhouse groups. Dressed in a sleeveless, orange- print dress and heels, Jones shook, shimmied, and strutted through her 50-minute set, channeling the spirit of Otis Redding, giving shout-outs to Baltimore, engaging in spirited call-and-response with her band, and at, one point, conducting a dance lesson rooted in her West African and Native American ancestry. I'd love to see her in a club, although I can't think of one that could contain her.
