What piece of art changed your life? How did it affect you?

Back in 1987 I had the opportunity to get to know the Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu while performing his concerto “To the Edge of Dream” with Seiji Ozawa and the Boston Symphony.

Up until that time I had seen classical music and my own work much more from an intellectual point of view, but after that experience, especially after getting over the shock of both of them encouraging me to induce my performance of the work with much more eroticism, my work transformed itself to be much more about beauty, poetry, and ultimately about the human experience.

Manuel Barrueco teaches at Peabody. His new CD, Sounds of the Americas, features Cuarteto Latinoamericano. Barrueco's previous disc, Tango Sensations, won "Best CD" in our 2008 Best of Baltimore issue.
