gaia dc

Baltimore street artist Gaia is wrapping up a commission for Smith Commons on H Street in D.C.

gaia canvas

Measuring 35'x30', the new mural is an adaptation of a canvas (above), titled Dusk, that Gaia painted last year.

peale self portrait

More Charles Willson Peale (above) than Banksy, it shows that Gaia is as Art-smart as he is street-smart.

You can read about the new, Gaia—curated street art show, Open Walls Baltimore, in our June issue and drive around Station North to check it out for...

BMA Receives Major Gift, Landmark Paintings

morris louis bma

Morris Louis came from Baltimore (MICA class of '33), and now, thanks to a gift from his widow, more of his acclaimed abstract artworks are coming to town. If you've visited the BMA's Contemporary Wing over the past decade, you've no doubt seen his work, and these new acquisitions—two major paintings and 19 drawings—will be seen when the Wing (currently under renovation) reopens in the Fall and when the museum mounts an exhibition of its Louis holdings in 2013.

The paintings are particularly important pieces, and here's more on that from BMA press materials...

The two newly gifted Louis paintings are rare works from a pivotal period in Louis’ career, when he experimented with a more gestural and lushly painted approach than he employed to create his celebrated “veil” paintings. Those works, which Louis began making in 1954, feature overlapping layers of ethereal color created by pouring thinned Magna acrylic paint directly onto unprimed and unstretched canvas....

Beach House Talks Touring, Crowd Surfing in Michigan

beach house bloom

A few days before embarking on an extensive tour supporting their sublime album, Bloom, Beach House’s Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally sat down at their Fells Point rehearsal space and talked about life on the road. They played nearly 200 shows after Teen Dream’s release, so I figured they might be a bit weary and jaded about it. Nothing could be further from the truth. They’d just finished packing up the industrial looking stage set they designed and built for the tour and seemed excited to get started. The band hasn't yet confirmed a Baltimore date, but you can catch them on David Letterman this Friday night. And you can read about Beach House in our June issue.

Victoria Legrand: It’s not hard to enjoy yourself on tour, because every night is different. Whether it’s a place with 200 capacity or 1,200. We’re not committed to just playing huge venues, and we actually prefer club shows where...

Buying Into Facebook?

facebook ebook

If you're thinking of taking the plunge and buying Facebook shares when the company goes public this week, you might want to check out an ebook from Baltimore native/financial journalist Nancy Miller. Miller's Facebook IPO Primer offers sound advice that cuts through the media hype and questions "the price of friendship." It's a quick read—a well-written 40 pages—that will interest casual investors and/or Facebook fans.

And what's the author's overall take on it? When Business Insider asked Miller if Facebook was a "good investment," she deemed it "a very risky stock."

But the smart money says a Facebook frenzy is imminent, no matter the risk.

Beach House Interview: Black Widows, Motel 6, and Mysticism

bloom promo

A few days before embarking on an extensive tour supporting Bloom, the hotly-aniticpated follow-up to 2010's Teen Dream, the members of Beach House sat down for a talk in their Fells Point rehearsal space. Guitarist/keyboardist Alex Scally nibbled on a pretzel stick, and singer/keyboardist Victoria Legrand swigged from a gallon jug of water while sitting in a fur-lined alcove they created for a Pitchfork video shoot. They were excited about the new record, which comes out tomorrow via Sub Pop, and spoke about the process of recording it at Sonic Ranch in Tornillo, Texas, which is located in the middle of nowhere, about a mile from the Mexican border.

Look for a Beach House story in the June issue of Baltimore.

JL: How did you end up recording in such a remote part of Texas?...

What to Do? What to Do?

aitken song1

Animal Collective's Geologist plays a DJ set tonight at the Hirshhorn in D.C. as part of a "happening" that incorporates musical performances into Doug Aitken's Song 1 piece (above), which wraps the exterior of the building in a seamless video from dusk to midnight. Tickets are $25.

Tonight and Sunday, the legendary Andre Watts performs Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 with Marin Alsop and the BSO at the Meyerhoff. They'll also perform it at Strathmore on Saturday.

Pink Floyd tribute band The Machine plays Baltimore Soundstage tomorrow night, and the transcendent Secret Mountains plays Golden West on Sunday.

If you haven't seen Centerstage's amazing production of The Whipping Man yet, this is your last chance. It closes on Sunday.

Life-Changing Art: Garth Knox

knox ecm

What piece of art changed your life? How did it affect you?

A beautiful 18th century italian viola d'amore. I remember being on a musical tour in Italy and having a week to spend in Padua. A italian friend who lives there asked me if I wanted to try out his viola d'amore for a few days. I'd never seen one before, but when I saw it, I immediately fell in love with it and did nothing else for those days!

Viola d'amores are a cross between violins and viola da gambas. They have the shape of the viola da gamba, but the size of a viola, and are played under the chin like a violin. They are usually beautifully carved with a blindfolded Cupid's head instead of the normal scroll. They have seven playing strings, which is already a lot, but as well as these, they have seven "resonance" strings hidden inside the neck. These ring on in an angelic way after you have finished playing and give a magical aura to the sound.

Those happy days in Italy playing viola d'amore...

More Theater News—Shakespeare Is Coming To Baltimore

CSC rendering

Chesapeake Shakespeare Company has acquired the Mercantile Trust and Deposit Company building at 200 E. Redwood Street as a second venue for its performances. The Howard County-based company—which currently stages most of its productions outdoors at the Patapsco Female Institute Historic Park in Ellicott City—plans to begin renovations early next year with an eye towards mounting a full season in 2014. CSC is working with Cho Benn Holback, the firm behind the Everyman and Creative Alliance renovations, on a design that mimics London's Globe Theatre and features a 250-seat theater (see above) for performances and educational programs. The total cost is estimated to be $6 million.

The announcement comes on the heels of a flurry of theater activity in Station North, the upcoming Everyman move to the Westside, recent renovations at the Lyric, and new leadership at Centerstage. “We are thrilled about our expansion...

Street Art Spectacle Taking Shape

Open Walls Baltimore, the ambitious street art exhibit put together by Gaia, is taking shape in Station North. In March, the large-scale artworks started going up around Greenmount West, Barclay, and Charles North, and the work continues through the end of May. We're running an Open Walls story (with photographs by Martha Cooper!) in the June issue, so keep an eye out for that. In the meantime, take a drive around Station North and peep some eye-popping murals.
