What piece of art changed your life? How did it affect you?
Without Aaron Copland's Third Symphony, I wouldn’t have had the idea to create my own symphonic work. I might not have known it was possible. When you do something that’s new and unique, there’s always someone who opened the door a little bit for you, and hearing his Third Symphony was a significant breakthrough for me. While I possessed an understanding of the spirit of Americana music and its themes and rhythmic excitement, I did not, at one time, get its symphonic potential. But Copland nailed it, and that’s something I want to celebrate. Without him, my Americana Symphony may not have arrived.
Mark O'Connor's Americana Symphony, featuring Marin Alsop and the BSO, has just been released on CD.
