Life-Changing Art: Wayne Coyne

What piece of art changed your life? How did it affect you?

For me, it would be seeing The Who in 1977. I had grown up listening to records and reading about rock stars, but to be in a place that was so charged and so exciting really seared it into my mind. This was still with Keith Moon and John Entwistle in the band, and even though some people would say they were past their peak, they weren’t when they came here to Oklahoma City. And it wasn’t just about the music. It was also about performance, charisma, message, style, and image. Everything about it made me feel like, "I want to be like that," knowing that it wasn’t just about playing music. Pete Townshend has this great quote that he never let the music get in the way of the performance, meaning that in the best way. It’s about everything you do, not just the notes you play. It’s about the way you present yourself to the world.

Wayne Coyne and his fabulous band, The Flaming Lips, play Merriweather Post Pavilion this Friday night, August 28th. The Lips’ new CD, Embryonic, comes out October 13th.
