Diehard music fans have a particularly tough decision to make tonight—check out the Baltimore debut of Cuban pianist Harold Lopez-Nussa at An die Musik or head down to the Creative Alliance for the "1963: Music and the Movement" panel discussion featuring historian Taylor Branch, promoter Milton Dugger, singer Sheila Ross, and professors Jelani Favors and Lester Spence and music by Craig Alston.
Lopez-Nussa, who mixes jazz and classical in his virtuosic playing, appeared in the Ninety Miles documentary that featured David Sanchez and Stefon Harris in 2011. He also took top honors in the solo piano contest at 2005's Montreux Jazz Fest, and this rare duo show with his percussionist brother should be quite a treat.
Branch needs no introduction and hearing him speak about music and its relationship to the Civil Rights Movement should be fascinating. Plus, he's in great company.
Basically, you can't go wrong with either choice.
