Tomorrow night, Haitian novelist Edwidge Danticat and songwriter Manno Charlemagne appear at Goucher College's Athenaeum. It's an amazing double bill, and I suspect Goucher's Madison Smartt Bell, who's written extensively about Haiti, played a large part in making it happen.
Danticat, recipient of a 2009 MacArthur Genius Award, will read from her books as well as the works of other Haitian writers, and Charlemagne, an activist/political figure who's been dubbed the "Bob Marley of Haiti," will play some of his protest songs.
Check out Junot Diaz reading a Danticat short story at The New Yorker's website and this amazing segment on Charlemagne by NPR.
The event is free, but tickets must be reserved by calling 410-337-6333 or emailing boxoffice@goucher.edu.
