What piece of art changed your life? How did it affect you?
Wow, it's 3 different things. The song ‘Dancing in the Street’ by Martha and the Vandellas blew me away as a kid. Pounding drums, wild horns, soul vocals, and a dance beat drove me wild. The Soupy Sales Show on local TV was my favorite. It was surreally silly and obviously meant for adults. I'd set my father's alarm early, so he'd go to work one hour before, and I could watch the show. I forget what Dada piece I first saw, but Dadaism and Surrealism definitely struck a chord with me, too. A blend of all the above plus my own personality helped make me the nut I am today.
Fred Schneider and the Mastergators will make a giddy and joyful noise at AVAM this Friday night. Tix are $25 in advance and $35 at the door, and the proceeds benefit AVAM.
