I just heard that soul great Solomon Burke has passed away. A few years ago, I interviewed Burke in Los Angeles, and he was an utter delight. Full of amazing stories and old school at his core—he told an assistant to have a fruit basket delivered to my hotel room—he talked about growing up in Philadelphia, recording during the golden age of Atlantic Records, hanging with admirers such as the Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin, and being re-discovered by a new generation of fans.
Burke was also a Globe Poster fan and spoke highly of Baltimore's Cicero family, who've run Globe for decades. He even agreed to appear in a Globe Poster documentary that's being made by myself, Alex Castro, and Rei Spinnicchio, and we filmed him in Philadelphia. I'll link to a trailer later today.
The world is a little less soulful without Solomon Burke in it.
