For the rest of this week, the BMA will knock $2 off admission to Andy Warhol: The Last Decade if you bring a non-perishable food item to the museum. The donations will go to the Maryland Food Bank, and I think Warhol would approve, because it evokes the spirit of volunteer work he did at a Manhattan church.
No kidding.
In fact, the program from Warhol's Memorial Mass (dated April 1, 1987) includes the following note from Rev. C. Hugh Hildesley...
Five hundred homeless and hungry New Yorkers will assemble on Easter Day at the Church of the Heavenly Rest on Fifth Avenue at 90th Street. They will be served a delicious meal, and they will be treated as honored guests by some eighty volunteers. They will also be saddened by the absence of one who, with dedicated regularity, greeted them on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter. Andy poured cofee, served food, and helped clean up. More than that, he was a true friend to these friendless. He loved these homeless New Yorkers, and they loved him back.
So this would be an excellent time to check out the Warhol show and tap into that spirit of giving by taking a donation. And you may want to consider something other than Campbell's soup.
