Feeling Blue

The Blue Man Group blew me away at the Hippodrome last night. I’d never seen them before and knew little about the show, except that it was supposedly “funny”—according to a server at Alewife—and a mix of classic Blue Man material and new pieces. It turned out to be great fun, from start to finish.

I’ve always thought those bald and blue guys looked a little creepy (like sinister mimes) but, onstage, they come across as benign, curious beings with outrageous percussion skills and a penchant for creative mischief. I won’t recap the best segments of the show—I don’t want to spoil the surprises—but it was, by turns, performance art, rock concert, rave, science lesson, magic show, improv session, and hi-tech spectacle with social commentary, splattering paint, audience participation, physical comedy, and Twinkies adding to the rip-roaring entertainment.

Audience members in the first few rows were provided with plastic ponchos and hoods to protect them from the onstage splatter, and by show’s end, the theater was trashed—with streamers littering the floor and hanging from the balcony.

I’ve never experienced anything quite like it, but I’d love to go again.

Blue Man Group is in town through November 7th.
