What piece of art changed your life? How did it affect you?
If teaching can be considered an art form and classes can be considered as artwork…. My college professors have definitely changed the makeup of my brain. David Sherman, a former professor at the California College of Arts and Crafts, taught a class on the history of experimental film and introduced me to people like Stan Brakhage, Bruce Baillie, Harry Smith, Kenneth Anger, and many more. The class sat thru hours and hours of film, slowly remapping and reconfiguring how images could be processed in one’s mind.
Two professors at the Maryland Institute College of Art did the same thing, but in a different way. Jeremy Sigler taught me that a gesture can be a poem, taking Fluxus ideologies and finding these gestures within films, even Hollywood films. Hugh Pocock showed me that air, light and water can be sculptural.
Being in their presence and taking in what they offered changed my brain, which now wants to be an open field. Thank you professors, for showing me amazing works of art through the art of teaching.
