What piece of art changed your life? How did it affect you?
The first time I entered a jazz club at 17 was the first time I heard real jazz. That changed my life. It was a super hip white-table-cloth kind of place on the Left Bank in Paris. There was a piano trio playing, and their sound is still in my head to this day. It was the combination of their style with the hipness of the room—people dressed up, having drinks, etc. It hit me right there that that was where I wanted to hang out for the rest of my life—at jazz clubs. Even though my instrument became the guitar, the piano trio still knocks me out maybe more than any other kind of jazz.
Paul Brady and the jazz-and-Django influenced Hot Club of Detroit come to Germano’s tomorrow night, before playing two nights at Joe’s Pub in New York. It’s a rare local gig for a Motor City quintet that gives Miles and Mingus a gypsy twist with just a dash of Motown soul and the occasional rock riff in the mix. The group has also been known to include Jobim and Rota in their sets. Wow. The show, which costs 15 bucks, starts at 7:30 pm.
