What piece of art changed your life? How did it affect you?
Picasso's Guernica, Jacob Lawrence’s Migration Series, Beethoven's Ninth, the [Michael Roemer] film Nothing But A Man, performances of the late Gloria Foster, the directing of Joe Chaikin, the composers Arvo Part and Meredith Monk, Annie Lennox, and many more. There is no one work of art that has changed my life. It's an accretion of works that have all spoken to me in subtle ways and have changed my perceptions about what is possible.
Anna Deavere Smith's brilliant one-woman show, Let Me Down Easy, runs through Sunday at Arena Stage in D.C. Do your best to see it. BTW, she's a Western grad, and her Aunt Lorraine, a retired Baltimore school teacher, is a fantastic character in the current show.
