Good luck deciding what to do this weekend—there are too many great events on tap! Tonight, a pair of keyboard wizards hit town: jazz pianist Matthew Shipp plays An die Musik, and New Orleans funk master Ivan Neville comes to 8x10, with Orgone opening. At the Recher, Technicolor Motor Home pays tribute to Steely Dan with a cast of amazing players and an ambitious set list. At the 14 Karat Cabaret’s Shattered Wig Night, Cort McMeel reads and The Go Pills and Goodloe Byron play music. There’s also an intriguing and mysterious project called Space Crafts and Insects (courtesy of Liz Downing and Nathan Bell) on that bill.
Tomorrow, Ethnic Heritage Ensemble makes its annual, Black History Month appearance at An die Musik, and Beach House winds up its epic Teen Dream tour at DC’s 9:30 Club. At 6 pm, Adam Stab hosts “Pens-Paper-Peoples,” featuring photojournalist Martha Cooper and graffiti artist Shaken at Sonar. A Creative Alliance open house at the Patterson features artist studio tours (7-9 pm) and a rare acoustic set by Future Islands (9 pm).
Sunday, the legendary Jonathan Richman will be at 8x10, and Celestial Septet, with Wilco’s Nels Cline on guitar, plays Windup Space.
