Mid-week can be tough, but here are some events to get you over the hump. Tonight, D:center Baltimore holds Design Conversation #28 (on Material, Building, and Sustainability) at Windup Space in Station North. Featuring architects Peter Doo and Garth Rockcastle, the talk, which is free, starts at 6pm. Later, guitarist Dustin Wong plays Golden West—with Woods and Ducktails also on the bill. Music starts at 10 pm, cover is $8.
Tomorrow is Maryland Arts Day in Annapolis! Hundreds of arts supporters are expected to converge on the Miller Senate Building for a daylong celebration with some lobbying and rallying in the mix. Cartoonist "Kal" Gallagher gives the keynote talk at 10 am and attorney Scott Johnson receives the Maryland Arts Advocate of the Year Award at 1:45 pm. The $50 fee includes breakfast, lunch, performances, workshops, and lots of networking.
At 4 pm tomorrow, Antero Pietila will speak at Albin O. Kuhn Library Gallery as part of UMBC's Social Sciences Lecture Series. The author of Not In My Neighborhood: How Bigotry Shaped a Great American City, Pietila will talk about the history of housing discrimination in Baltimore. Pietila isn't some ivory tower theorist—he's an old school journalist (who spent 35 years at The Sun) with an eye for historical detail and a flair for storytelling. As a result, his book is an engaging read that sheds light on the city and its neighborhoods. I expect his talk—which is free and open to the public—will do the same.
