Tonight, a pair of local indie-rock powerhouses, Lower Dens and Wye Oak, share a bill at the Black Cat in D.C. Closer to home, the web documentary Hometown Baghdad screens at Towson University, as part of its Bridges to the World film fest. Tomorrow, an exhibit of James DuSel’s evocative photographs opens at Minas in Hampden.
Saturday afternoon, the Poe House and Museum hosts its “Cask of Amontillado” wine tasting at Westminster Hall. As you may know, the city is eliminating Poe House funding, so this would be a great way to show some support, mingle with Poe fans, and meet curator Jeff Jerome. The event, which lasts from noon to 4 pm, features Poe impersonator David Keltz (pictured above), theatrical performances of Poe classics by Tony Tsendeas, a film tribute to Vincent Price, palm and tarot readings, belly dancing, improv comedy, Poe-inspired artwork, and tours of Westminster Catacombs. The $25 admission includes 3 wine tastings, and one beer tasting. Designated drivers may attend for $20, and children under 12 are not permitted.
On Sunday, legendary local poet/musician/artist Chris Mason (who is also ½ of the Tinklers) celebrates the release of an endearing and inventive new book, Ho Hum Hiccup, at the Red Room in Waverly. The Tinklers and Microkingdom will also perform.
And classical music lovers can check out “LA Phil LIVE,” a simulcast of the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s all-Tchaikovsky program from Disney Concert Hall, at local movie theaters. The orchestra will play three Shakespeare-inspired overtures, and actors Orlando Bloom Malcolm McDowell, and Matthew Rhys will preface each piece with an excerpt from the Bard’s plays. The broadcast begins at 2pm, and locations include Columbia Mall 14, Owings Mills 17, Cinemark Egyptian 24, and Bel Air Cinema 14.
