A few worthwhile benefits are on tap for this weekend. Leon Fleisher and Katherine Jacobson Fleisher will play solo and duo pieces at Towson’s Central Presbyterian Church to benefit victims of the disasters in Japan. A $20 minimum donation is suggested. And at the Creative Alliance, Night of a 1000 Dylans will pay tribute to the legendary Bard, who celebrates his 70th birthday next week. The bill includes Victoria Vox, Gypsy Dawg, and Cameron Blake, and the $16 cover will go to the Baltimore College Peace Network, the Creative Alliance, and Roots Café.
Tomorrow, the Chesapeake Bay Blues Festival kicks off with Chris Isaak, John Mayall, the Lee Boys, Otis Taylor; Sunday, Ray Manzarek, Little Feat, and Kenny Wayne Shepherd headline the fest, which benefits Special Olympics and other charities. Gates open at 10:30 am, and the music starts at 11 am.
The excellent 510 Reading Series, hosted by Michael Kimball and Jen Michalski, continues at Minas in Hampden. Sarah Rose Etter, Steve Himmer, Paul Maliszewski, Joseph Riippi, and Scott McClanahan will read their fiction.
Sunday, Arty Hill brings the twang to the Polish Home Club, with the Joy of Maryland Polka Band, at 1 pm.
That afternoon, bassist and Peabody grad Blake Meister will be prepping for an upcoming recording session with a special show at Jazzway 6004 at 5pm. His band features saxophonist Gary Thomas, guitarist Paul Bollenback, pianist Marc Copland, and drummer Ralph Peterson. If you’re a jazz fan, you do not want to miss this show.
