Life-Changing Art: Sherman Alexie

What piece of art changed your life? How did it affect you?

For various reasons, I had a debilitating case of writers block. I thought my career was over and then my friend Adrian Arleo showed me some of her new sculptures. One of them was a woman with horses for arms. As soon as I saw it the first lines of a new poem jumped into my head. Adrian’s art saved mine. Even now when I am feeling lost and unable to write I stare at the deer shaped human eye she gave me.

Sherman Alexie’s The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, winner of the 2007 National Book Award, is this year’s "One Maryland One Book" selection. This week, Alexie appears at various sites around the state—Chesapeake College (Thursday, 7 pm), Allegany College (Friday, noon), Weinberg Center for the Arts (Friday, 7 pm), and the Baltimore Book Festival (Saturday, 2 pm). Alexie’s book, Dangerous Astronomy (pictured above), was inspired by Arleo’s work and features one of her sculptures on the cover.
