OrchKids, the music education initiative started by BSO Music Director Marin Alsop, expanded to its third site yesterday. During a spirited program at West Baltimore's Mary Winterling Elementary School, students received new instruments from Music & Arts—the Frederick-based retailer has committed $90,000 worth of instruments to the program—and performed with OrchKids participants from nearby Lockerman Bundy Elementary. Principal Nikia Carter even played some tuba, much to the students' delight.
According to OrchKids Artistic Director Dan Trahey, the program will expand to a fourth site, in Highlandtown, in early 2012.
