What piece of art changed your life? How did it affect you?
The work by potter George Ohr in 1890s Biloxi, Mississippi. The incredible inspiration and creative variety that went into his work—despite him being virtually unknown in his own time—inspired me to be more creative in music. It also resulted in my learning to throw on a wheel and make pottery. I kind of have to get in the same '"no mind" state.
Power pop maestro Matthew Sweet comes to our area for three shows over the next few days. It's the 20th anniversary of Sweet's classic Girlfriend album, and he's playing that disc in its entirety, and you can also expect tunes from Modern Art, his latest. Tonight's Birchmere show is sold out, but tickets are still available for tomorrow night at Rams Head in Annapolis and Saturday at the Avalon Theater in Easton. I heard Sweet a few months ago at the Big Star Third tribute in NYC, and he nailed "Big Black Car" with angelic and plaintive vocals that gorgeously echoed Alex Chilton's original. He's a gem.
