Guitarist Manuel Barrueco and choreographer Liz Lerman have won fellowship grants for artistic excellence from United States Artists, the national arts advocacy organization. Lerman, who won a MacArthur genius grant in 2002, was cited for being "a pioneer in making site-specific dances and including various communities in artistic and civic engagement projects that often mix dance with spoken word, imagery, and music. She also became known for including seniors as dancers in her company." Barrueco, who teaches at Peabody and was recently nominated for a Latin Grammy (for "Best Classical Album"), was lauded for "working with a diverse range of musicians, from Plácido Domingo and Seiji Ozawa to Al DiMiola and Andy Summers."
Barrueco and Lerman will each receive $50,000 from USA.
