Vikan Leaving the Walters

Gary Vikan, longtime Walters Art Museum director, will step down next year. An announcement was made at yesterday's Board of Trustees meeting that Vikan, who's been with the Walters for 27 years (18 as director), will be leaving at the end of June 2013. Although no reason was given for his departure, Vikan said in a press release that "the word ‘retirement’ is not in my vocabulary. I look forward to the next chapter in my career, without yet knowing what it will be." Vikan reportedly has two book in the works.
