What piece of art changed your life? How did it affect you?
I watched Sharon-Jones perform when I was 19 years old, and it knocked me on my ass. I adore Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings! I could on and on. Dap-Tone (Studios) was actually a huge inspiration for us when we were setting up a studio in my old house, and we love everything the label puts out. They're putting out some of the best music in the world in my own opinion, and everyone in the band is into it.
Brittany Howard and Alabama Shakes released one of the most infectiously soulful records of 2011, a four-song EP that included instant classic "Hold On." The band's debut full-length, Boys & Girls, comes out next Tuesday on ATO Records, Dave Matthews' label. With any luck at all, you can pick up a copy a few days early at the band's Ramshead Live show this Saturday.
