Costas Grimaldis opened his Charles Street gallery during the Carter administration and has lots of great stories to share about the local, national, and international art scenes. I profiled Grimaldis in our current issue, and, in the piece, he mentions that acclaimed artist Alice Neel once painted his portrait. Here it is.
Back in the day, Neel exhibited at Grimaldis, where you could have bought her paintings for about $25,000—these days, you'd have to add a zero, or two, to that figure. Some of the paintings that were shown in Baltimore are now in the permanent collection at London's Tate Modern, including a portrait of Joe Gould that used to hang over Grimaldis's desk.
