Life-Changing Art: Shodekeh

What piece of art changed your life? How did it affect you?

This group right here (see video above). The X-Ecutioners, because they showed that the art of Hip Hop can work as an ensemble beyond the art of MCing. They’re a legendary four-man DJ/Turntablist ensemble pushing the technical and compositional possibilities of the turntables as a musical instrument—yeah, life changing. They were a huge inspiration for my beatbox crew "Larynx," which formed my last year in college and inspired what I'm trying to do with EMBODY Lab—from beatboxing to opera, throat singing, and everything else beyond and in between...

Shodekeh presents an EMBODY event tomorrow night at Metro Gallery. True to form, he's recruited a wide range of musicians—from Wendel Patrick and Kenny Liner to Navasha Daya and Victoria Vox!—and they'll perform during the first two sets. The third and final set will be a cipher featuring Celebration's Katrina Ford. Wow. The show is free and starts at 8:30 pm. Also, Shodekeh recently launched an ambitous Kickstarter to raise funds for recording his debut album, Muse
