Mad Men (just acting) & Mad Men (for real)

By John Lewis

Baltimore native Matthew Weiner picked up a pair of Emmys Sunday night for his work on Mad Men, which won for "Outstanding Drama Series." In the "Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series" category, Weiner beat out Baltimore's David Simon and Ed Burns, who were nominated for The Wire.

Shame on The Emmys for giving The Wire just one award over the course of its five-year run. Simon and Burns' mantles at home should be loaded with Emmy hardware, but I'll bet they were penalized for actually being mad men. No kidding. I don't think the Emmy folks wanted Simon's righteous anger to be part of their prime-time love fest. How else can you explain the best show on television being virtually shut out at the Emmys?
