By John Lewis

What piece of art changed your life? And how did it affect you?

It was a drawing on canvas by Cy Twombly owned by the Museum of Modern Art in Vienna. I did not understand some curls and asked myself what´s the point of them being presented even in a serious circumstance, in a museum. I transformed them to a plastical form and handled around with it—so i understood and this was the beginning of my adaptives, which were my main course of my first part of being an artist. I found my own trace I could follow. At this time, I did not know that Twombly made sculptures as well. After many years, I found out that there were some similarities and was astonished.

Austrian artist Franz West is the subject of a major retrospective at the BMA. It closes January 4, 2009.
