M.I.A. & Blaqstarr Cover Wire Theme

By John Lewis

M.I.A., the British/Sri Lankan songwriter/producer/designer, has teamed with Baltimore DJ Blaqstarr for this take on The Wire theme song, "Way Down in the Hole." It's the latest version of the Tom Waits-penned tune, which has already been covered by The Blind Boys of Alabama, The Neville Brothers, Steve Earle, and DoMaJe, a local gospel group. This time around, they've taken more liberties with the original and re-tooled it for the dance floor. It works.

This isn't the first time the M.I.A./Blaqstarr team has yielded excellent results. And he's told me to expect more joint releases in the future.
