Poe Funeral Procession

By John Lewis

Yesterday was a beautiful day for Poe's funeral, and hundreds of fans turned out to commemorate the anniversary of his death (October 7, 1849). Part of Nevermore 2009, the citywide fest honoring Poe, it began with a funeral procession from the Poe House on Amity Street to Westminster Hall. At 11:30 am, a horse-drawn hearse pulled up in front of the house. Minutes later, pallbearers carried a casket out of the house and loaded it into the hearse. Led by the Loch Raven Pipes and Drums and a police escort, the procession—with Poe House Curator Jeff Jerome seated beside the driver—made its way across MLK Blvd to Westminster Hall for the funeral service. Here are some pics from the procession...

  1. Its too bad I missed the funeral procession, I was only half a mile away but I was working. Looks like they put an incredible amount of effort into it, would have loved to get some pictures of my own!
