Holiday Monument Completed!

By John Lewis

Late Wednesday morning, artist James Reid beamed as his Billie Holiday sculpture was reinstalled atop the black marble pedestal he'd always envisioned for it. The statue, originally erected on Pennsylvania Avenue in 1985, was supposed to include a pedestal with panels illustrating two of Holiday's best known songs, "Strange Fruit" and "God Bless the Child," [...]

John Waters's Rear Projection on Public Radio

By John Lewis

John Waters turned up on PRI's The Takeaway yesterday talking about his new art exhibition, Rear Projection, which opened last week at Marianne Boesky Gallery in New York. His usual witty and urbane self, Waters discusses various pieces, including sculptures inspired by Ike and Tina Turner, roach traps, and facial cream. A concurrent show of [...]

Fugue Chamber, Olfactory Factory, and more

By John Lewis

If you haven't checked out the Laure Drogoul retrospective (Follies, Predicaments, and Other Conundrums) at MICA, you have a few more days. It's a fascinating, whimsical, absurd, and sprawling show, one that speaks to the free-wheeling creative spirit that flourishes in this city. Over the past two decades, Drogoul has been an integral part of [...]

Life-Changing Art: Franz West

By John Lewis

What piece of art changed your life? And how did it affect you?
It was a drawing on canvas by Cy Twombly owned by the Museum of Modern Art in Vienna. I did not understand some curls and asked myself what´s the point of them being presented even in a serious [...]

Life-Changing Art: Shinique Smith

By John Lewis

What piece of art changed your life? And how did it affect you?
I must say that the question of 1 piece of art, music, film that changed my life is difficult because there are many...Many!
I could easily give you a list of 20 off the top of my head. I had narrowed it down [...]

When Zappa Returns, Where Should He Stay?

By John Lewis

The Public Art Commission's approval of a sculpture honoring native son Frank Zappa has triggered discussions about where it should be installed. I've heard folks suggest MICA, Mount Vernon, Mercy Hospital (where Zappa was born), and even the Inner Harbor—all heavily trafficked areas. I thought West Saratoga Street, near Saint Alphonsus, might be a [...]

Sculpture at Evergreen

By John Lewis

This biennial exhibition is always a treat. Featuring commissioned works installed outdoors at Evergreen House, it includes pieces affixed to the house, jutting between columns (pictured above, Sharon Engelstein's Green Golly), sitting on the lawn, stretched over a creek, and tucked away in the woods. It's intriguing, fascinating, whimsical, and flat-out fun. Through September 28th.

Cell Phones, Sculpture, and Jennifer Bishop at the BMA

By John Lewis

A few days ago, I grabbed some pasta salad and a copy of The Urbanite, the "Crime and Violence" issue, at Eddie's and lunched in the BMA's sculpture garden. Reading Mike Anft's excellent piece on the robbery/beating of Zachary Sowers, I noticed the evocative portraits accompanying the article. They were shot by Jennifer Bishop, [...]
