During Friday night's Flaming Lips show at Merriweather, guitarist/keyboardist/MVP Steven Drozd told the crowd that "Pompeii" was inspired by local band Lake Trout. Wow. I knew that Lips producer Dave Fridmann worked on Lake Trout's 2005 CD, Not Them, You, but I had no idea they'd inspired one of the Lips' finest tunes. I'll try [...]

Manson Mania... Not

By John Lewis

Amid all the Manson mania these days—this week marks the 40th anniversary of the Tate/LaBianca murders—John Waters wades into the fray to advocate for the release of Leslie Van Houten, who was convicted in the LaBianca killings. Waters closely followed the Manson trials and eventually befriended Van Houten. In his upcoming book, Role Models, Waters [...]

Neverland Nevermore

By John Lewis

In all the hoopla surrounding Michael Jackson's death, the pop singer's identification with Peter Pan was mentioned ad nauseam. But as Pop Matters points out, Jackson's affinity for Edgar Allan Poe was almost completely overlooked. Apparently, Jackson was so obsessed with Poe that he planned to star, as Poe, in a film, and had spoken [...]
