The grant of $17,500 has been awarded to develop the orchestra’s OrchKids program, which currently provides nearly 600 Baltimore City students with music lessons, tutoring and after-school care. Peabody Grad Cited in Jazz Critics' Poll

devin gray cover

The results of the 2012 Rhapsody Jazz Critics' Poll were announced today, and Devin Gray's debut disc, Dirigo Rataplan, came in at #3 in the "Best Debut Album" category. A drummer and Peabody graduate, Gray studied with Gary Thomas and Michael Formanek in the conservatory's jazz department. Formanek appears on the album along with trumpeter Dave Ballou and saxophonist Ellery Eskelin, who also have strong local ties. Gray returns to Baltimore on March 26th, when he'll perform with the Out of Your Head Collective at Windup Space.

Shodekeh at the Corcoran

shodekeh bmag

I just heard that local beatboxer Shodekeh will be performing at the Corcoran on March 13th. He'll be collaborating with Corcoran College of Art & Design students and dancer Krysia Bock.

If you go, be sure to also check out Pump Me Up, the Corcoran's exhibition on D.C. subculture curated by Roger Gastman. It includes work by Globe Poster, the Baltimore-based company that designed and printed posters for D.C. go-go legends like Chuck Brown and Trouble Funk.

And Embody, Shodekeh's series of vocal music showcases and collaborations, continues at Metro Gallery next Wednesday.

Life-Changing Art: George Saunders

dybek cover

What piece of art changed your life? How did it affect you?

A short story called "Hot Ice," by Stuart Dybek. It was set in what was essentially my father's home neighborhood in Chicago and was the first work of literature I'd ever read in which I recognized the real-world model. So there was this jolt of energy, like: Ah, this is what fiction looks like when it is about the here-and-now. I'd only read older stories—Hemingway and so on—and this story seemed to be in Technicolor instead of black-and-white.

George Saunders is one of the greatest fiction writers alive. If you haven't checked out last week's cover story on Saunders in The New York Times Magazine, you should. And you should definitely check out his new...

2012 In Review: Best Reads

clifton cover

The Collected Poems of Lucille Clifton 1965-2010 will appeal to anyone with a love, or even a fondness, for the written word. Clifton, a national treasure and former poet laureate of Maryland, wrote about everyday life with an economy of words and an abundance of spirit. Her humanity pulses on every page. But before you dive into these engrossing poems, be sure to read Toni Morrison’s insightful foreward.

My favorite biography of the year was D.T. Max’s take on David Foster Wallace’s brilliant and troubled life. Every Love Story Is a Ghost Story is a straightforward and moving account of the now-iconic writer’s rise through the ranks of contemporary literature and academia, while struggling with the mental illness that led him to take his life. Along the way, Max notes how John Barth played a key role in Wallace’s...

2012 In Review: Best Concerts

My favorite concerts this year all happened outside the local club scene—three were at schools and one was at an arena. Two of the school concerts were associated with OrchKids, the BSO-sponsored after-school music program. In March, OrchKids collaborated with visiting musicians from London’s Guildhall School of Music and Drama and local students from New Song Academy, City Neighbors, and School for the Arts for a show at City Neighbors High School. The entire project came together in just a week and was one of the most ambitious and spirited shows I saw.

The most spirited show was definitely the Archipelago Project (with OrchKids director Dan Trahey on truba) in the hallway of Mary Winterling Elementary School during the last week of school. I couldn’t stop smiling. To see why, check out the video clip above.

In May, Peabody celebrated Gary Thomas’s tenth...

2012 In Review: Best Exhibitions

exhibit catalogues

My two favorite art shows this year couldn’t have been more different: Open Walls Baltimore, an exhibition of street art around Station North, and Revealing the African Presence in Renaissance Europe, an illuminating show at the Walters. Organized by local street artist Gaia, Open Walls features the work of nearly two-dozen artists (from Baltimore and beyond) on walls around the Station North arts district. The pieces vary greatly, from New Orleans artist Momo’s abstract piece at 440 E. Oliver Street to the towering portrait by Arizona artist Jetsonorama at 1803 Barclay Street. I haven’t tired of walking or driving past the walls, which are a startling and welcome addition to the arts district.

The Walters show embodies the best qualities of the museum during the Gary Vikan era. Revealing the African Presence highlights fabulous objects from the museum’s collections and recontextualizes them with...

From Baltimore to Buckingham

kwame obe

Last Thursday, Center Stage artistic director Kwame Kwei-Armah was made an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire at Buckingham Palace. Here's Kwei-Armah holding the medal presented to him by the Prince of Wales, an honor that's given to distinguished artists, public servants, and philanthoropists. If you don't know why a local theater's artistic director is getting the royal treatment, you should read this profile.

Dan Deacon makes his national TV debut tonight on ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live! (show starts at 1130 pm). Deacon and his ensemble will play "True Thrush" off his latest album, America, and audience members will use a new Deacon smartphone app to become part of the light show. It should be a hoot.
