Atomic Books

Red Emma’s
This worker owned and collectively run basement bookstore and coffeehouse in Mt. Vernon is named after anarchist Emma Goldman and filled with books about organizing and activism, eco-defense, and poetry. 800 St. Paul St., 410-230-0450

The Book Escape
An amazingly easy-to-navigate used bookstore, this Federal Hill shop carries books on every topic: Shakespeare, film, nature, crafts, war, etc. Plus, some brand new tomes and a healthy local interest section. 805 Light St., 410-576-8885

Red Canoe Bookstore Cafe
Ask co-owner Nicole Ufferfilge-Selhorst to pick her favorite children’s book—and you’ll end up with a pile bigger than your kid. This Lauraville spot also hosts author signings, sing alongs, and book clubs. 4337 Harford Rd., 410-444-4440
