Got a Minute? (self-released)
Milkshake continues to up the ante for kids’ music in Baltimore. Here, the band——led by guitarist Mikel Gehl and singer Lisa Mathews——charges through 34 big-hearted songs, including a dozen tunes recorded for PBS Kids, with all-star players such as Kyf Brewer, Marcy Marxer, and Howard Markman in tow. Their excellent version of “Tip Toe Thru the Tulips” owes more to its late-1920s origins than the Tiny Tim novelty, proving that the song, like this band, is ageless.
Milkshake plays a CD release party at Rams Head Live on April 14 at 2 p.m.
Psychedelic bliss courses through these seven songs. After a few uneven EPs that hinted at greatness to come, the Baltimore sextet trims away all extraneous elements and crafts a mesmerizing record featuring Kelly Laughlin’s shimmering and soulful vocals over swelling guitars and a rumbling rhythm section that’s downright tribal at times. Put the six-minute “Weepy Little Fingers” between Beach House and Lower Dens on your “Best of Baltimore” mixtape.
