Once was, you had to take a pretty grueling road trip for a huge summer festival——like Chicago for Lollapalooza or Tennessee for Bonnaroo. That was until last year’s inaugural Firefly Music Festival near Dover Downs——merely a two-hour drive from Baltimore. “When we were deciding on our next venture, we saw a huge void for a music festival on the East Coast,” says Sarah McGrath, festival director at Red Frog Events. “And this is so centrally located between Baltimore, Philadelphia, D.C., and New York.” This year’s festival——from June 21 to 23——features 71 acts including Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, pictured, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Vampire Weekend, The Lumineers, Public Enemy, MGMT, Ellie Goulding, and more. “While we’re sort of rock focused, we try to offer a ton of different genres,” McGrath says. “From up-and-comers to musical legends.” Other attractions include a vintage arcade, hot-air balloon, outdoor cinema, and DogFish Head beer tent. “We try to make the experience really one of a kind,” she says.
The second annual Firefly Music Festival brings big names to the Mid-Atlantic.
