DISCOVER DANIELS DAY KEEPS HOWARD COUNTY HERITAGE ALIVE
It’s both a Howard County and Baltimore County relic…The old mill town of Daniels, Maryland, that spanned the Patapsco River above Ellicott City, devastated by flood 40 years ago (1972 Tropical Storm Agnes), is “long gone, but not forgotten.” Although no one lives there, life abounds in Daniels. Now there’s opportunity to Discover Daniels and experience life as it was before suburbanization.
Discover Daniels Day is Saturday, November 3rd from 10AM to 5PM in the Daniels Area of Patapsco Valley State Park in Ellicott City. The family day of fun and learning is a free event, designed to acquaint newcomers to Howard County and reacquaint life-long county residents with the rich history and environmental resources of the former textile mill village. Activities include hikes led by Boy Scouts and volunteer rangers, living history Civil War re-enactors, music by the Daniels Band and Sam “The Muleman” Miller, railroad and history talks, nature and environmental programs, and children’s games. Food and crafts will be available for sale.
There will also be oral history, storytelling, and discussions of the future of Daniels and the Patapsco Valley. A look at the past, present and future awaits participants who choose to Discover Daniels.
Free shuttle bus service to the Daniels event will be provided from free parking at Hollifield Station Elementary School, 8701 Stonehouse Drive, and Crossroads Church of the Nazarene, 2750 Rogers Ave, Ellicott City, 21043. (Daniels Road will be closed off during the event.)
Located just 4 miles north of historic Ellicott City’s Main Street, Daniels was once a bustling village where families worked in the textile mill, found recreation on the banks of the Patapsco River, and lived as a tight-knit community bound together by faith, family and friends. Today Daniels is found in the center of Patapsco Valley State Park in Howard County and is host to those who love the great outdoors and history, families with roots in the old mill town, newcomers seeking outdoor adventure, and a faith community anchored atop Standfast Hill at Gary Memorial United Methodist Church. And Daniels is home to the only cave in Howard County, and a town band without a town!
