Our Model Wins Miss USA!

A familiar face took the crown at Sunday night's Miss USA pageant in Las Vegas. Alyssa Campanella, a New Jersey native who now lives in Los Angeles, was the model for our Spring Fashion shoot last year. Last spring, Campanella posed in beautiful sets built by Hampden's Red Tree (now Trohv) for our Alice in Wonderland-themed fashion shoot.

On Sunday, she answered tough questions, like whether marijuana should be legalized (yes, for medical reasons) and if evolution should be taught in schools (yes, she said, calling herself a "science geek.") Eventually, Campanella took home the ultimate prize. In September, she will compete in the Miss Universe pageant in Brazil.

What can I say? We have good taste....

Aquarium Names New CEO

aquarium ceo

Ending months of speculation, the National Aquarium has named John Racanelli (above) as CEO. He succeeds Dave Pittenger, who’s been CEO for the past 15 years and a steady presence at the Aquarium since 1981, the year it opened.

With nearly two decades of leadership experience at aquariums in Florida and California, as well as experience working with conservation and non-profit groups, Racanelli would seem to be a good fit for the Aquarium, which is focusing on its own conservation efforts and looking to up the profile of its second site in D.C.

“I believe the modern movement towards inspiring care for our blue planet can trace much of its origin to the National Aquarium, which set a new standard for appreciating the aquatic world 30 years ago,” said Racanelli in a press release.  “I am deeply honored to be a part of carrying this mission forward.

“This opportunity to lead and...

Reservoir Hill Builds a New Playground in One Day

On Thursday, residents of Reservoir Hill, with help from the Baltimore Ravens and national non-profit KaBOOM!, built a glorious playground in a previously blighted part of German Park in a single day.

Dozens of volunteers started early in the morning and by 3 p.m., when Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake cut the ribbon to open the playground, only some finishing touches were left to be done on the massive play area, which was designed with input from local kids.

This kind of a one-day build is becoming more common, something The New York Times called "the playground movement" in a recent blog post, comparing it to Amish barn raisings, in that the entire community works together to accomplish something concrete—or, in this case, rubber, plastic, and metal.

This Sunday, June 19th, the community will celebrate the grand opening of the new playground, located at Linden and Whitelock, with free ice cream...

Sade Loves Baltimore

Last night, I had a chance to chat with R&B star Sade before she performed at 1st Mariner Arena—the first date on her first North American tour in almost ten years.

I asked her why she chose to launch the tour in Baltimore and she made clear it wasn't just a random choice.

"We’ve had good times in Baltimore in the past—I just love it here," she said. "I’ve always had a romantic memory from when I first heard Nina Simone’s 'Baltimore.'"

It's not surprising to hear the Nigerian-British singer cite Simone's 1978 version of the song (below), which was actually written and recorded by Randy Newman in 1977, since their voices share a smoky quality and emotional resonance.

I reviewed the show last night for Rolling Stone, where I used to work. You can read that here.

Police Officer Bitten by Rat While Driving

I don't know what the worst part of this story is. There's the fact that a rat was able to crawl up inside a moving vehicle and bite the driver, who happened to be a police officer on his way to a crime scene. Naturally, you would think that would take the cake. But then there's also the vignette wherein the police officers are sent back to retrieve the rat so that the hospital can test it for diseases, and one of them has to "beat the rat to death with an umbrella."

I mean, I guess you gotta do what you gotta do in that kind of situation, but, yeesh.

Kids' lemonade stand draws $500 fine.

lemonade standThis news woke me up this morning. Several Maryland children were raising money for charity yesterday, but a Montgomery County inspector fined their parents $500 when they ignored warnings to shut down their lemonade stand, according to Savannah Guthrie, a news reader on NBC's Today show.

The stand, unfortunately, is located outside the U.S. Open golf tournament being held at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda where vendors are drawing scrutiny from county personnel.

The parents are vowing to protest the fine and to allow their children to continue selling cold drinks, Guthrie reported.

This is not the kind of golf drama we're used to!

That's Pucked Up

I woke up this morning to headlines about new riots. Were they in a Middle Eastern country looking to topple an oppressive government? No. Were they in some European nation facing economic collapse? No. They were in Vancouver, of all places. Vancouver, Canada. Why? Because a small black disc slapped with a piece of wood—but not just any piece of wood; a piece of wood held by a Boston Bruins player!—slid past the Vancouver Canucks goalie and landed in some netting. And it happened four times!

So Canucks fans—a bit like Terps fans in College Park—took to the streets to throw bottles, smash windows, set fires, overturn cars, and clash with police.

That’s pucked up.

Cops and Firefighters Unveil New Billboard

As we anticipated yesterday, Baltimore City police and firefighter unions today unveiled a new billboard, pictured here, slamming City Hall for perceived slights in negotiations over pensions and pay.

As we noted yesterday, the new billboard, located at the corner of Orleans St. and I-83, is timed to coincide with the National Conference of Mayors meeting in Baltimore, which begins tomorrow.

The unions were initially planning to be out protesting the meeting, but decided against it. And the tone of the new billboard is considerably tamer than the one the unions put up last year in the heat of the contract negotiations, which read "Welcome to Baltimore. Home to a Mayor & City Council who turned their backs on our Police &...

Tupac Returns

Tupac Shakur is back in the headlines. Two weeks ago, the PBS website claimed the late rapper—who lived in Baltimore, for awhile, and attended School for the Arts—was spotted in New Zealand. The report, which looked legit, lit up the blogosphere and brought to mind Elvis sightings of yore. As it turned out, the PBS site had been hacked, and the report was false. Shakur was, of course, shot and killed in Las Vegas in 1996.

Now, there’s a report circulating that some knucklehead claims to have shot Shakur in 1994. That shooting didn’t kill Shakur, but, according to many observers, it did set off a chain of events that led to his murder, which has never been solved.

Today would have been Shakur’s 40th...
