Owl Meat Gravy (real name Bob Swank), whose clever writings on his twitter account, blog, and message boards made him a local celebrity and Best of Baltimore winner, has died. We learned the news from Richard Gorelick's Sun blog Baltimore Diner, one of several local blogs where OMG was a frequent—and hilarious—contributor.
When it was announced a few weeks ago that OMG won a Best of Baltimore award as one of Baltimore's top-five Twitter feeds, he accepted via Twitter in his own inimitable way: "Told that @Baltimoremag named me 1 of the 5 best twitterers. I'll have to verify that the next time I go the the dentist". He went on to say that he was "Honored 2 get a #BestOfBaltimore from @Baltimoremag but now ive got performance anxiety. mayB if I turn on the water?"
No word, so far, on how Swank died. Gorelick notes that the motto on his card, Larvatus Prodeo, is Latin for "I go forward wearing a mask," which only serves to remind us how little many of us—me anyway—really knew about a guy whose humor I so thoroughly enjoyed on a daily basis. Such is the digital world, a little dimmer today.
Gorelick tweeted about an hour ago, "I want #owlmeatgravy to trend in Baltimore today," and as one re-tweeter pointed out, "Really, that would be the memorial he would have wanted." I've done my part.
