Cutting into The Bachelorette

Any local viewers of ABC's The Bacherlorette were sure to notice a break in Monday night's program. Towards the end of the show (right before the rose ceremony) WMAR meteorologist—and Baltimore Top Single—Wyatt Everhart interrupted programming to update viewers about a tornado warning in Harford County. After showing several doppler maps and storm footage, they returned to The Bacherlorette after the rose ceremony and viewers didn't know who she elminated.

To most people this would seem like a normal occurence: The National Weather Service issues a severe warning and it's a meteorologist's job to inform his viewers. However, many Bacherlotette fans were livid. Some sample Facebook posts I saw: "You're ruining my show!" and "I might...

Black Keys, Cee Lo, TV on the Radio coming to Freefest

Less than two months before the September 10th Virgin Mobile Freefest at Merriweather Post Pavilion, organizers finally got around to announcing the line-up this morning. Bluesy rockers The Black Keys, retro soul man Cee Lo Green (left), and eclectic indie-rock band TV on the Radio will headline the fest,  with artists like Deadmau5, a solo set by James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem, and many others filling out the bill.

The line-up is chock-full of critic and hipster favorites with dedicated fanbases that might make getting tickets to the free festival pretty difficult. For the full line-up (presented via video clip from Sir Richard Branson and fans) and ticket info, check out the fest's Facebook page.

Does Ticketmaster Gouge Concertgoers?

Earlier this week, Midnight Sun covered a story about a Baltimore man who recently filed a lawsuit against ticket behemoth Live Nation over a Jackson Browne concert in Baltimore two years ago. After purchasing the ticket for $52 from Ticketmaster, he was charged an additional $12 in service fees. Fees which Bourgeois believes violate Baltimore City law.

In the lawsuit, Bourgeois alleges that Live Nation and Ticketmaster are not registered as ticket agencies by the city of Baltimore. As a result of this, he claims that their excessive fees are indistinguishable to scalping under city law. He accuses Live Nation of using their dominant market position in the ticket sale business to impose service charges on top of the face value of tickets, which is in direct violation of Baltimore City law, which according to the lawsuit allows for only a .50 cent service charge over a ticket’s face value.

The lawsuit against Live Nation isn’t the first time Baltimore has made national news for conflicts with the ticket conglomerate. Just last year, local venue Merriweather Post Pavilion along with its sister...

The other hot dog eating contest

On the Fourth of July, Coney Island always plays host to Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest and this year the winner was Joey Chestnut, eating a whopping 62 dogs in 10 minutes. Yikes.

But, three years ago, locals decided to get in on the fun. Duesenberg's Café and Grill in Cantonsville hosts their own hot dog eating contest, sponsored by Hebrew National. The contestants get the same amount of time as the Nathan's contest and the winner receives a trophy, a $100 gift certificate to Duesenberg's, and is featured in the Catonsville parade.

Yesterday, it was 37-year-old Steve from Owings Mills who took home the title, downing 15 hot dogs in 10 minutes. When asked how he felt after winning the competition, he said, quite succinctly, "Full." We bet.

Watch a video of the action...

Hopkins, St. John's Among Nation's Most Expensive Colleges

This post about tuition prices at two- and four-year colleges and universities on Gawker caught my eye yesterday. Of course, Gawker had some fun with it, skewering the New England liberal arts colleges that top the list for private four-year institutions. I mean, who doesn't like a good Middlebury joke, right?

The website hosting the data is run by the U.S. Department of Education College and Affordability Transparency Center and allows you to search via school type (two-year, four-year, public, private, etc.) and provides raw tuition and net tuition (i.e. including financial aid) data. Oddly, there does not seem to be an easy way to generate state-by-state lists ranking schools by tuition prices. Surely, that would be a popular feature for parents and students looking to get the most bang for their buck. Anyway, the website can be accessed here

City Design School Names Principal, Adopts New Philosophy

The new Baltimore City Design School has named Joseph Freed as its first principal. Freed previously worked at the State Department of Education, where he helped design a development program for principals, and at Carver Center for the Arts and Technology, where he was principal and served on the school's founding team. In the press release announcing his hiring, the following statement caught my eye: "Freed’s philosophy on education is based on the Chinese proverb, `Tell me and I’ll forget; show me and I may remember; involve me and I’ll understand.'” At a time when standardized tests seem to rule the day, this sort of attitude is downright refreshing at a city public school. We could use more of it.

Flying Dog wins "Bitch" Ruling

raging bitch But the First Amendment lawsuit continues. Flying Dog Brewery in Frederick is now allowed to sell its Raging Bitch Belgian-Style IPA in Michigan after that state's liquor board commission this week reversed its original decision to ban the brew because of its name.

The Michigan commission previously ruled that the "Raging Bitch" name and its label, pictured, "endangered public safety and was harmful to any adult who might read the beer's name on a restaurant menu," according to Flying Dog's website blog. (Horrors!)

Eater.com first reported the reversal of the ban yesterday. Gazette.net covered the lawsuit in a March 31 story.

Flying Dog has no plans to drop its First Amendment lawsuit, however, the brewery's blog said. The suit was filed against...

Baltimore Is the New Brooklyn

Last Sunday, I was grooving to the retro soul of JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound at MASS MoCA—it was the last day of Wilco's Solid Sound Festival—when the band tore into an R&B rave-up called "Baltimore Is the New Brooklyn." No kidding. The crowd went nuts (at least, me and my wife and kids did), and the band certainly played it like they meant it. For proof of that, check out the video clip above, which was shot with my cheap camera, so the audio isn't so good.

If you can't make them out, here are the lyrics...

It’s just a short train ride away from where you really want to be
