Among the many surreal things about yesterday's earthquake was the fact that most of us were experiencing one for the first time.
I was at the hair salon when it occurred and, despite the fact that entire work stations moved and the floor seemed to buck beneath me, I still thought it could've been a particularly large train that had just rumbled by. (Good to know I'll always have my wits about me in a crisis!)
But let's face it, we Marylanders just have no experience registering earthquakes as, well, earthquakes. So I took to Facebook to ask my friends what they initially thought it was. Here are a few interesting responses.
From Janet: I initially thought it was one of my giant trees collapsing. Then I thought it was a low flying military helicopter!
From Susan: I assumed it was painters or workmen on the roof of the barn I was in.
From Jennifer: Honestly? For a split second, another terrorist attack.
From Kevin: We live on a pretty busy road ... I thought it was an enormously large truck or huge farm equipment going by. It was when the dogs started freaking out I realized what it was.
From Jennifer: I yelled at my kids to stop running around upstairs. Didn't occur to me that 70 lbs of kid cannot shake ceilings.
From Jayme: A low flying plane.
From Randi: I initially thought it was my 60 pound lab/pit going after my Mom's bichon. It feels like an earthquake when he hauls ass.
From Mike: Part of the construction work that's going on down the street. By the way, the work is still going on today and it's much louder and more annoying.
From Brian: I thought it was an earthquake, though I thought that was a ridiculous thought. The woman I was talking to at work thought someone had crashed into the building.
From Joy: Okay, I know it's crazy but we just saw Close Encounters of the Third Kind, so first I thought alien craft. Then I thought a plane/bomb had crashed somewhere. To me both were more likely than an earthquake in Bawlmer!! Maybe its what the Grand Prix will feel like??
