Giving AND Getting

Yesterday, someone told me about GiveCorps, which, at first glance, appeared to be just another online fundraising site along the lines of Kickstarter. But it's geared towards local non-profits, and it differs in two key ways— first, a project does't have to meet its entire fundraising goal to collect the money that's raised, and second, contributors receive coupons from area businesses. So it's like a Kickstarter/Groupon hybrid that boosts Baltimore non-profits and various intiatives relating to community development, education, and the arts. Pretty cool. Today's deal is $50 off a purchase of $100 or more at Nelson Coleman jewelers. It's a great way to give and get.

The Sun Makes More Cuts

In the couple years since the massive layoffs of 2009, The Baltimore Sun has seemed to be on a more positive track, adding new sections and avoiding any further staff cuts. Sadly, it seems cuts are returning to our local paper, owned by the Chicago-based Tribune Co. According to the Daily Record, management is currently negotiation with the Washington-Baltimore Newspaper Guild to cut 20 to 25 positions, including two columnists, two critics, an editorial writer, two copy editors, two design editors and a photographer, through voluntary buyouts.

The ongoing question remains how—and if—The Sun and newspapers nationwide can continue to operate as more people get their news from computers and mobile...

He's Baaaaack

Literally, not a week goes by without somebody asking me about my old partner in crime Allan Prell, aka "Uncle Allie." I will always consider Allan to be a radio god, a mentor, and a good friend, but to be honest, we've lost touch over the years. That is, until last week when I got an unexpected invitation from him in the mail. So what's the invitation for? Hard to say. Apparently, he's doing a cabaret style performance with his pal, the pianist Russ Margo, at Germano's Cabaret in Little Italy.

According to Cyd Wolf, who co-owns Germano's, Prell was in town (and didn't call me? I'm hurt!) to introduce Margo at a recent show and was "bitten by the cabaret bug." Now the two have come up with some sort of "act." Knowing Uncle Ally, it will be silly, inappropriate, and spit-out-your-espresso funny.

As Allan told me in the invitation: "I hope to see you one of those two nights, beause it will probably never happen again." So come out and show your love for the radio legend himself, Baltimore! (But don't bring your old lawn furniture. This is NOT an...

Mayoral candidate releases rap song

This could definitely be filed under "only in Baltimore." Mayoral candidate Frank Conaway released a campaign rap song on his website.

The song—coming in at exactly 1:00—implores voters to elect Frank Conaway and "worry about the crime around the way." Other clever rhymes include Stephanie Rawlings-Fake and rhyming Catherine Pugh with, well, poo. The rap also takes a shot at Otis Rolley, saying "I can go and watch Martin if I want to see you."

While it isn't certain that the campaign song improves Conaway's chances, it's at least receiving some online attention. One tweet stated, "Maybe hire a graphic designer, not a rapper?" (See graphic, pictured).

For a more, ahem, traditional take on the mayoral candidates, look out for our September issue.

Reporter on the Loose

On Friday, Good Morning America poked fun at WJZ reporter Mike Hellgren, who recently reported on a police suspect who, according to an eyewitness drawing, looked a lot like Hellgren himself. Lucky for Hellgren, the actual assailant was apprehended by police, lifting suspicions about the reporter.

Perhaps not surprisingly, this isn't the first time this has happened. The GMA report includes another incident in Kansas City, and, a couple years ago, there was this still (left) in which a dumbfounded anchor looks an awful lot the suspected rapist he's reporting on. Maybe the stations should start keeping lawyers on hand...

Scary Mommy Scores a Book Deal

As if securing a spot on our list of Baltimore's 10 best blogs wasn't enough, Scary Mommy, a.k.a. Jill Smokler of Mt. Washington, just scored a book deal with Simon & Schuster Gallery. Smokler, who we profiled back in January, informed her readers of the news in her own inimitable way.

The book will be called "Confessions of a Scary Mommy" and will be available on Mother's Day, 2012. Congratulations, Scary one!

Me and Bubba

colts media guide

I was saddened to hear about Bubba Smith’s passing yesterday, but it got me thinking about one of my favorite childhood memories. At the age of six, I was a huge football fan, and I’d heard about a “Meet the Colts” drawing. Determined to enter, I hounded my dad until he took me to Doug Griffith Chrysler Plymouth, where I filled out a form (name, address, phone #) and stuffed it inside a box jam-packed with forms from other kids hoping to meet their heroes. A few weeks later, I got a call saying I’d won. Actually, a few dozen kids were chosen, but it was definitely my golden ticket moment, and we were told to gather at Memorial Stadium on a Saturday.

I’ll never forget it. A Colts official greeted the group, gave us all copies of the 1971 Media Guide, and took us straight to the field where the team was practicing. Johnny Unitas threw long spirals to receivers sprinting down the sideline, David Lee punted balls that seemed to disappear into the atmosphere before returning to earth, kicker Jim O’Brien split the uprights with field goals, and...

Smells Like Middle-Aged Spirit

I'm mostly pumped about the whole relaunch of WHFS, now streaming live here and on 97.5 FM.

WHFS was a pretty important station to me back in my early days in Baltimore. It turned me onto to the likes of the Pixies, Nirvana, and Beck—bands/artists I still listen to and love to this day.

But when I heard they were relaunching, I assumed they would be playing today's alternative music, giving me a chance to perhaps discover some new artists to add to my collection. Instead, the station, right down to the old DJs (hey there, Gina Crash and Neci!), is mostly a big ol' 1990s nostalgia fest.

Okay, fair enough. I'm still happy to hear Cake, Smashing Pumpkins, and Jane's Addiction any time of day. But what about the alternative music of today?

Which actually got me thinking: What even IS the alternative music of today? I'm not talking the really underground stuff, but the kind of stuff WHFS used to play, the...

Some Thoughts from the Rabble Rouser

I posted earlier about BoB winner Adam Meister's victory today, when Councilwoman Belinda Conaway dropped her $21 million defamation lawsuit against him. He emailed me with some thoughts on the events of the day, including an interaction with Conaway's father, veteran circuit court clerk and mayoral candidate Frank Conaway, Sr.

The best part about today was after the formal part of the hearing was complete Frank Conway Sr. approached me and said congratulations and put his hand out to shake my hand. I refused to shake his hand and I walked by him. How dare he try to make this seem like business as usual! What they put me through was wrong and I will NEVER forgive them. People need to support Nick Mosby for city council in the 7th district:

I hope Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, the other serious candidates for mayor, and Jack Young give their opinion about this situation. What do...
