As Jess Blumberg reported on our On The Town nightlife blog earlier today, the Mt. Washington Tavern caught fire overnight, causing the second story to collapse into the first and creating what owner Rob Frisch called "a total loss." In a statement posted on the Tavern's Facebook page, the owners promised to come back: "The fire has taken the Tavern for now but we look very forward to rebuilding and being better than ever." You can see some of the damage documented by WBAL's Lowell Melser this morning.
Later in the day, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake stopped by the site. "I can't tell you how many times I've been in the tavern,” she told a WMAR news reporter. “It's a staple in the community so I just wanted to stop by and take a look to see how much damage there was and to check on the firefighters out here working on it."
