Video: On the Ravens sideline

The staff over at Rave TV—the Ravens in-house broadcasting department—did an incredible job of putting together highlight videos from Saturday's game against the Denver Broncos. We especially appreciate the intermittent clips from the Ravens sideline and post-game pressers.

This video, from the second half, has got to be our favorite.

Justin Tucker: Practice (Legal or Otherwise) Makes Perfect

Courtesy: Baltimore Ravens' Facebook page

Justin Tucker’s game-winning field goal in the second overtime of the Ravens’ amazing 38-35 win over the Denver Broncos will go down as one of the biggest kicks in NFL playoff history.

Not just because he drilled a strike from 47 yards out on an impossibly cold night in Denver in an impossibly unlikely victory — but also because of some astute gamesmanship on the rookie’s part. Tucker jumped on the field between the overtime periods and took a practice whack shortly before attempting his game-winner.

Arizona Cardinal kicker Jay Feely, an 11-year veteran, tweeted immediately afterwards that it’s actually “against the NFL rules to kick a practice ball in overtime on the field.”

Feely adds that he had refs tell him that twice this year

However, it’s up to the referees to chase the kicker, Tucker, in this case, off the field. It's also really more of a gray area — and a non-punishable offense — akin to Colorado’s new...

Rawlings-Blake Wagers Crab Cakes for Steaks With Denver Mayor

Facebook page of Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake

In accordance with the traditional terms of such mayoral wagers, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake announced Friday that she has agreed to send a platter of broiled crab cakes from J. W. Faidley Seafood in Lexington Market to Denver's mayor — should the Ravens lose in the Mile-High City Saturday afternoon.

Additionally, the mayor has agreed to order that the Washington Monument in Mount Vernon be bathed in blue and orange light. (The blue and orange light thing really seems like the Denver mayor wants to stick it to Baltimore.)

On the other hand, Mayor Michael Hancock of Denver agreed to send a box of dry-aged “cowboy cut” rib eye steaks from Lombardi Brothers Meats to Baltimore should the Ravens prevail.

And, Hancock also agreed to perform Ray Lewis' famous pre-game dance if the Ravens pull off the upset. That, of course, we want to see.

Both mayors joined in a...

Ravens vs. Broncos: No. 1 Seed Isn’t a Lock

Courtesy: Baltimore Ravens Facebook page

Looking for heartening news going into the Ravens playoff game Saturday against heavily favored Denver? How 'bout this: The AFC’s top seed (Denver, 13-3, this year) has gone 13-9 in the divisional round of NFL playoffs since its current format began in 1990.

It’s a winning mark, obviously, but the top seed’s 59 percent margin over the past two decades-plus hardly makes knocking off a young Denver squad mission impossible. Interestingly, in the NFC, the top seed is just 1-4 since 2007 in the divisional playoffs, according to an enlightening analysis by the Denver Post, of all sources.

Oddsmakers, nonetheless, have installed the Broncos as 9.5-point favorites.

Of course, the Broncos handled the Ravens easily during Week 15 at M&T Bank Stadium, but as many have noted, much has changed in Baltimore since then. First, Ravens have...

Maryland Public Schools Ranked Best for 5th Year

Courtesy: Maryland State Department of Education's Facebook page

The state’s public school system remains the top school system in the country for a fifth straight year, according to a report released by Education Week Thursday.

A leading education publication, Education Week graded Maryland public schools a B+ overall, the only state to receive such a high mark. Massachusetts, New York and Virginia followed Maryland in the ranking, each receiving B marks.

Maryland earned its best marks, A’s, in the areas of early-childhood education and preparing students for the workforce. The state’s school system received A- marks in the areas of college readiness and school accountability.

The state received its lowest mark, C-, for equity in K-12 achievement. A summary of the Education Week report can be found here. Maryland’s report card...

Ray Lewis, Ravens Turn Attention to Denver

There's no time to rest on your laurels once the NFL playoffs begin. As soon as Sunday’s 24-9 win over the Indianapolis Colts’ ended, Ray Lewis and his teammates directed their attention to Denver.

The fact that the Broncos rode into town a few weeks ago and dismantled the Ravens in a 34-17 victory seemed to focus the Ravens on their next opponent that much more quickly. The Ravens — who might not be healthy, but at least have most of their key players on the field — want payback. Of course, Lewis and the Ravens also don’t want Ray’s “last ride” to end this weekend. However, the Ravens also have two streaks they’d like to end: Denver's current 11-game winning streak and Peyton Manning's personal nine-game streak over Baltimore.

"I've already turned in my iPad to get Denver film now," Lewis told...

Ravens vs. Colts: How Will Ray Lewis Impact the Game?

Courtesy: Official Facebook page of Baltimore Ravens

Amongst all the talk swirling around Ray Lewis’ retirement announcement Wednesday, isn’t the most urgent question how does his return this weekend impact the game on the field? He’s the team’s leader, but he’s also 37 and hasn’t played in more than two months.

We can talk about his future as an NFL commentator later, right? (Lewis is reportedly ready to join ESPN’s klatch of former players, post-Ravens.)

At ESPN.com, NFL Nation blogger Paul Kuharsky wrote that he thinks the attention around Lewis’ announcement this week will “sap a little bit of energy from the Ravens during the week and actually be a bit of an advantage to the upset-minded Colts.”

Colts head coach Chuck Pagano, also, of course, the Ravens’ former defensive coordinator, believes...

Seven Baltimore couples rang in the New Year — the first day same-sex couples could wed in Maryland — with marriages at City Hall just after midnight.

Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake presided over several of the ceremonies.

The photo above of James Scales (left) and Wiiliam Tasker (right) and the one posted below from City Hall were taken by Shoot for Equality. More photos from the historic occasion can be found on Shoot for Equality's Facebook page and brief bios of the Baltimore couples can be found at Freedom to Marry.

Last Dance: Ray Lewis Retiring After the Playoffs

Drafted in the first round of the Baltimore Ravens first draft in 1996, Ray Lewis announced today that he is retiring at the end of this season.

With the Ravens facing the Indianapolis Colts at home this Sunday — and Lewis scheduled to play after sitting out two and a half months with an injury — this could be the future Hall-of-Famer’s last game.

A triceps injury in a mid-October game against the Dallas Cowboys started Lewis thinking about his future and retirement, according to BaltimoreRavens.com. In the end, Lewis decided to go through intensive rehabilitation to return to the field one more time this season. He informed his teammates of his decision this morning.

''I talked to my team today,'' Lewis said Wednesday, according to Yahoo Sports. "I talked to them about life in...
