Tall Ships Return, Waters' Interest Ebbs

State officials are hoping tall ships will draw more than a million people to the Inner Harbor next June. A tried and true attraction, the ships will be part of an international maritime festival (June 13-19), which is a key component (no pun intended) of the Star Spangled Banner bicentennial celebration. According to reports, the tall ships drew more than a million visitors to the harbor in 2000, and the tourism folks are hoping they'll help make the upcoming festival the largest ever at the site.

But there's one Baltimorean who definitely won't be attending. John Waters, who's well-known for poking fun at the tall-ships-as-tourist-draw concept, remains unimpressed. Reached via email, Waters says he "still hates tall ships!"
